On Feb 21, 2004 George "Bud" Pierce passed away from complications to
surgery. Bud was a fellow faceter and a friend to many here on the digest. He
would have gatherings at his cabin in Banner Elk, NC during the shows for faceters
to meet and talk about stones. Always someone there to share ideas and talk
about the newest things from the shows. The people who knew him are well
aware of what the man was and those that didn't would never believe me anyway. He
was one individual that truly made a difference in the world
Doctor, police officer, federal agent Bud was all of these in a life that
had enough excitement for a dozen people. Even tho he worked with some of the
worse side of the human race he loved people. He also loved cutting stones he
was pretty good at it even tho he wasn't so sure of that.My sympathy goes to
Carol, his wife for I will say there will never be another Bud, I hope you
come through these times as strong as I know Bud was.
I would like to say in closing the way I will always remember bud is the way
I saw him at his home just before the surgery. As I was leaving the last
thing that Bud said to me was.
Goodbye My Friend

Hi Every One,
I have faceted a few gem stones now on my new XS3 faceting head. you can see
them at : http://www.huntforgems.com/xs3.html
This faceting head is great.
I just love it. If you want one and didn't get on the list for one in time
you will have a chance at it in time. Gearloose is a great person to buy
from and talk to.
Warm Regards
Carl Mauritz

I just acquired two ultra tec model v2, one is left handed one is right
handed. the left hand one has the keyed dop system the right hand one does
not. I know the heads will fit either machine but they dials are on the
wrong side. is there away to swap out either the keyed dop holder or the
dials to make the keyed dop go on the right handed machine or do I need to
order an upgrade from ultra tec. I will be selling the left handed one with
what ever dop system I have left or the keyed dop system if I do have to
order the upgrade from Ultra tec. it has 2 index gears. 3 or 4 laps, a few
dops and the transfer jig. I do not know what laps are with it or the
quality or how they were charged. Both machines are in very good working
order.
Let me know if you are interested or can help.

I have seen reference to a hand faceting machine made be Jack Lahr called a
Lap-Lap at
http://www.rockhounds.com/rockgem/articles/laplap.html
Can anyone tell me if they have used one of these and what their
availability is?
Are there any other makers of hand faceting machines (no motors or masts)
that you can give me contact info for? I have done searches on hand
faceting machines on Google and havent really come up with anything other
than the Lap-Lap.
Thanks
Bill Hughes
_______
The LapLap is a great little unit for a little over $100 (when I purchased mine).
There was some mention of this device in several earlier digest.
Jerry Wykoff makes a Calibrated Jamb Peg Kit that can be found on the IGS
website ( www.gemsociety.org ) but I do not know
if it would be adaptable
to the hand motion required to use it with a fixed lap and it has a mast.
Here is Jack Lahr's e-mail. jlahr@ecr.net

TODAY'S FUNNY ~
December 18, 1992
In October, a cleaning crew accidentally tossed out an
exhibit at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. The exhibit consisted of 14,000 cigarette
butts -- the amount a smoker produces in a lifetime --
crammed into coffee cans. Said the artist, in defense
of the cleaning crew,
"(The butts) didn't smell very good."
